Arts Midwest, on behalf of the National Endowment for the Arts, is excited to share not just one opportunity for youths to be impacted by Shakespeare but two. Youths will experience Shakespeare plays in performance on stages and in schools across the county. The Bard’s words will also resound within facilities, schools, and programs within the Juvenile Justice System. These opportunities will reach youths with limited access to the arts due to factors such as historically underrepresented cultural groups, economically disadvantaged, and geographic location.
The program continues to provide a Request for Proposals to support partnerships between professional theater companies across the nation to perform a Shakespeare play with a team of professional actors for 10 or more middle and/high schools and conduct related educational activities for students. This request is similar to the work that has continued to be supported by the program throughout the last 15 years.

New this year, is a separate Request for Proposals to support partnerships between theater companies or organizations across the nation to engage youths within the juvenile justice system with the works of Shakespeare through theater education programs. This request will expand the program to reach an underrepresented demographic of youths that have limited access and give them an opportunity to engage with Shakespeare’s text with experienced teaching artists or practitioners.

Since 2003, Shakespeare in American Communities has connected youths across the nation by exploring Shakespeare’s plays through live, professional productions to experiencing iambic pentameter and his text within themselves and their classrooms to sharing creative expression with their peers. Students continue to find the connection and relevance of Shakespeare to today. Theater companies have expanded and deepened their education departments and partnerships with a variety of schools and enhance their artistic viewpoints.
