The Theater at Monmouth

Monmouth, Maine

The Theater at Monmouth, the Shakespearean theater of Maine, is a year-round repertory company of professional artists from across Maine and United States. The 2008 season is the company’s 39th year of performances and will include a winter tour of a Shakespearean play, a spring tour of a play for children, a summer season of six plays in repertory with several special events, a fall production of an operetta or musical, and several special projects. The theater is based in the central Maine community of Monmouth (population 3,785), located in western Kennebec County between the commerce centers of Augusta, the state capital, and Lewiston/Auburn. The primary performance facility of The Theater at Monmouth is Cumston Hall, a one-of-a-kind Victorian opera house constructed in 1900. The magnificent Romanesque revival building, which is on the National Register of Historic Buildings, includes a 260-seat theater and the local library. The Theater at Monmouth is a member of the Theater Communications Group, Shakespeare Theater Association of America, The New England Theatre Conference, The Association of Presenters of Northern New England, Maine Performing Arts Network, The Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce, and Winthrop Chamber of Commerce.
