Park Square Theatre Company

St. Paul, Minnesota

Park Square Theatre Company is a premier producing theater that is valued for a range of work crafted with intelligence. Its nine annual productions include six subscription shows and a holiday show, as well as two shows specifically for middle- and high-school students. The company's award-winning education program provides teachers and students with a context that promotes a deeper understanding of the play, the playwright, the artistic interpretation, and the participatory nature of theater. This program serves middle- and high-school students from urban, rural, and suburban districts in a three-state region. In addition to low-priced matinee performances, the company's signature immersion day offers small-group workshops with leading teaching artists, along with large group demonstrations and discussions with the cast and production team.

As part of Shakespeare for a New Generation, Park Square Theatre Company will produce Othello, directed by Richard Cook and utilizing the two-hour cutting that Michael Bigelow Dixon created for the Humana Festival/Actors Theatre of Louisville. The production is built around James A. Williams as Othello; Williams made his Broadway debut in August Wilson's Radio Golf, in the same role he originated at Yale Repertory Theater. The production design will reference the great period of European colonialism when garrisons of empires were found around the world. The four-week run will include at least 10 school matinees, which will serve students in grades 10-12. Additional educational activities will include 45-minute workshops, Build-a-Moment demonstrations, and post-show discussions, all of which are offered before or after performances to accommodate schools' schedules.
