Greenbriar Valley Theatre

Lewisburg, West Virginia

Greenbrier Valley Theatre was founded in 1965 and began as a summer repertory theater in a tent on the banks of the Greenbrier River. It later took residence in a barn near the Greenbrier Valley Airport. In 2000, Greenbrier Valley Theatre renovated its permanent home in a downtown facility, expanded its programming to be year-round, and began working under a letter of agreement with Actors' Equity Association. In March 2006, the theater was designated as the official professional theater by the West Virginia legislature. Its mission is to create live, professional theater in West Virginia and enlighten, enrich, and enliven the life of its region. As a producing organization, the theater is dedicated to sharing the connection between art and life with its community. The company is committed to the education of people of all ages, to developing new plays, and to excellence in live theater.

As part of Shakespeare for a New Generation, Greenbrier Valley Theatre will present a production of Macbeth. This production will fulfill the theater's artistic vision and challenge its artistic capabilities by surrounding and enveloping the audience visually, emotionally, and aurally, giving the play a shape that is alive, moving, and never quite silent. The elements infused in Shakespeare's text will float and whisper around the audience throughout the performance, and the production will illuminate themes relevant to our society's recent past. School matinees will be scheduled upon request by the schools and will include 20 or more middle- and high-schools in the immediate area and surrounding regions, including southwestern Virginia.
