The Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum
Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum is a professional repertory theater housed in a unique outdoor amphitheater nestled in the Topanga Canyon area of the Santa Monica Mountain Range. Since its founding 40 years ago by actor, musician, and botanist Will Geer, the company has provided respite for audiences, students, teachers, and artists eager to take part in its singular blending of art and nature. The company is overseen by Artistic Director Ellen Geer (daughter of Will Geer). Their repertory company, private Academy of the Classics, and school programs, including in-school Classroom Enrichment and School Days Field Trip, seek to connect participants to the shared humanity present in heightened language, great music, and live performance. The repertory season features four to five plays from Shakespeare, Moliere, Sheridan, Miller, Hellman, Wilder, Orwell, Williams, or other classic and modern playwrights, along with special performances including concerts, dance, and improvisation. Integral to all of the company’s programs is a commitment to education by passing on a love of language to the next generation of students, artists, and audience members. Serving Los Angeles and the surrounding areas, Theatricum is a center for the arts of culture and social expression.
For Shakespeare in American Communities, The Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum will present student matinees of King Lear directed by Artistic Director Ellen Geer, as part of their School Days Field Trip program, and will tour A Midsummer Night’s Dream directed by Founding Company Member Melora Marshall, as part of their Classroom Enrichment program. The company will provide related educational activities, including professional development for teachers, workshops, and a study guide. They anticipate reaching 25 schools from the greater Los Angeles area.
