With Shakespeare as their standard and inspiration, the Orlando Shakespeare Theater in Partnership with University of Central Florida produces bold professional theater, develops new plays, and provides innovative educational experiences that enrich our community. Their vision is to create theater of extraordinary quality that encourages the actor/audience relationship, embraces the passionate use of language, and ignites the imagination. The company’s goal is to be a nationally recognized destination theater that offers productions and education year round for all audiences. Orlando Shakespeare Theater remains dedicated to providing high-quality professional productions of Shakespeare and other classic plays, as well as theater for young audiences; creatively giving students and audiences an exceptional understanding of the work and overarching value of William Shakespeare’s plays; and nurturing new playwrights and presenting new plays. Innovative educational experiences have been a part of their mission of since its inception 25 years ago. Annually, the education department services more than 25,000 students through their educational programming designed to positively impact youths of all ages by providing them with theatrical learning experiences that reach from the classroom to the theater. Programs are designed to convey the power and universality of Shakespeare’s language as they supplement current curriculum connections.
For Shakespeare in American Communities, Orlando Shakespeare Theater will present student matinees and evening performances of Julius Caesar (March and April 2014) and The Taming of the Shrew directed by Artistic Director Jim Helsinger (September and October 2013). The company will provide related educational activities, including in-classroom workshops, backstage experiences, and a curriculum guide. They anticipate reaching 90 schools from eight counties in central Florida.
