Shakespeare in American Communities Phase One (2003-2004)

The National Endowment for the Arts created Shakespeare in American Communities to introduce a new generation of audiences to the greatest playwright in the English language. In order to understand American culture or American theater, one must first understand Shakespeare.

Phase One (2003-2004) began in September 2003 and continued through November 2004.

This phase of the initiative brought live theater of the highest caliber to small and mid-size communities. From Anchorage, Alaska; Ada, Ohio; and Avon, Colorado to Weatherford, Oklahoma; Whitefish, Montana; and Yuma, Arizona, the Arts Endowment helped to reinvigorate the theater touring tradition and strengthen the arts in communities across the country.

The goal of Shakespeare in American Communities is to demonstrate the benefits of theater touring and lead to making professional theater a vital part of the cultural landscape of smaller communities. These performances and educational activities inspired young and old to attend future theatrical productions and helped create a new appreciation for live theater and Shakespeare.
